John A. Kinch directs the strategic and daily operations of Michigan Energy Options, emphasizing innovative and collaborative projects between the public and private sectors. Under John, MEO’s community-based work has expanded across the state and its revenue has diversified. Mission driven as ever, MEO is forging regional partnerships, working in new ways and in new arenas and building the core competencies of the organization.
John has a 25-year history in green causes. He spent a decade in marketing communications and fundraising with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in its International headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, and in the Michigan Chapter. Among his duties at TNC, he helped create strategic global conservation campaigns involving international governments, federal agencies, private businesses funders and partner nonprofits.
John directed marketing communications at both the University of Michigan and the Land Policy Institute at Michigan State University and developed a green investing venture for a finance technology company.
An occasional adjunct professor at Michigan State University, he teaches courses in community service and professional writing around the issue of sustainability. John has a PhD from MSU with a dissertation on the “the cyclical reinvention of the American Environmental Movement.” A former reporter and practicing freelance journalist, he is published widely, including a book, and articles for wire services and The New York Times, among others
John has been a nonprofit volunteer for numerous groups, including Michigan Environmental Council, the IT Zone, New Enterprise at Work, West Michigan Environmental Action Council and US Green Building Council. Before becoming the Executive Director of Michigan Energy Options, he served on their Board of Directors.
